Search, common knowledge, and competition

چکیده

This paper analyzes the effects of buyer search costs and incomplete information, private and common knowledge of the sellers, on seller competition. It turns out that small changes in search costs may have large but quantifiable effects on pricing when the seller has good private knowledge about the buyer, but the common knowledge of the buyer valuations is lacking among the sellers. As an application, one can see how the effect of a firm’s information-gathering technology may depend on whether the implemented technology is expected to make the final knowledge of the firms more or less consistent across firms. Spurious complexity and common standards in markets for consumer goods

It has been argued that cognitively constrained consumers respond suboptimally to complex decision problems, and that firms can exploit these limitations by introducing spurious complexity into tariff structures, weakening price competition. We model a countervailing force. Restricting one’s choices to the most easily comparable options is a psychologically well-attested heuristic. Consumers wh...

Never Too Early, Never Too Late: Effects of Search Timing on Product Innovation

A significant stream of research has emerged to study search (i.e., problem-solving) in organizations, and several insights have been discovered through this work. One is that firms search close to their current knowledge-bases (Nelson and Winter, 1982), and that searching further than that is rare and risky (Katila, 2002). Another is that successful search often combines knowledge that is know...

A novel hybrid meta-heuristic technique applied to the well-known benchmark optimization problems

In this paper, a hybrid meta-heuristic algorithm, based on imperialistic competition algorithm (ICA), harmony search (HS), and simulated annealing (SA) is presented. The body of the proposed hybrid algorithm is based on ICA. The proposed hybrid algorithm inherits the advantages of the process of harmony creation in HS algorithm to improve the exploitation phase of the ICA algorithm. In addition...
